Hi Chris. Thanks for your reply. In his case, I know that he's got a very deep-seated fear of failure. There were learning disability issues when he was in school, and that was right about the time when the school systems here believed that every child who had problems was a candidate for ritalin. So even though he hates the job, in his mind it's the best he can do, he's been doing it for years, and so it's safe because no one there will tell him he's stupid now. The funny thing -- or maybe not -- is that the night after I wrote my last comment, he started talking about going back to finish school so that he can get a better job, and yesterday he told me that he got a reply from the school he emailed for information. We'll see what happens from here, but he's taken an actual first step beyond talking this time, so that's a big shift in direction. :)

Thanks for your comment Ruth. In situations like the one you describe with your son, I often ask the client to get curious about what they're really afraid of. Just getting aware of what's really at stake for them is often a key step in letting go of the fear. Sometimes describing the fear out loud to a person who they know won't judge or criticize them also creates a change in perspective. The same can be true when it comes to saying what they want. Anyway, thanks for the book recommendation -- I'll check it out.

In gratitude,
Chris

Great article! It's hard to convince people that their desires matter and that they can have it all. I'm going through this with my son now. He hates his job, and wants to make changes but is afraid to even try and take the first step. I even bought him the book Changing Your Course by Bob and Melinda Blanchard to show him that other people have made successful career changes and lived to tell about it. I loved the book but so far he hasn't taken the bait yet.
