Hi Mark -- thanks for your kind comments. I looked up the De Mello story and it reminded me a lot of Alice Miller's discussion of what "love" between parents and children really is in many cases -- for the children it's fear and obedience of the parents, and for the parents it's a desire to live vicariously through the kids. I'm glad there are authors out there who are willing to address this issue. -- Best, Chris

Hi Chris,

Found you via:
http://www.improvedlife.ca/content/ninth-edition-carnival-improving-life

Great post! Even at 47 now I encounter situations that seem to relate to childhood experiences around loss or humiliation (real and imaginary.)

One very comforting book that presents itself like a slap in the face (!) is "Awareness" by the late Father Anthony De Mello.

On page 10 of my paperback edition a woman told Father Anthony of a conference speech which opened with the fine sounding words:

"The test of love is sacrifice, and the gauge of love is unselfishness."

To which, he replies:
"That's marvelous... (but) would you want me to love you at the cost of my happiness?"

The "slap" comes from what the lady's next words are - and how Anthony De Mellow responds.

Well worth reading a dozen times just for that one story!

Regards
